Where to stand for the best view of Big Ben

Big Ben is the name of the great bell. The tower that holds it is the Elizabeth Tower. In everyday speech people say Big Ben for the whole landmark, and so do the photo guides below.

There is no single official best spot. The places on this page are the ones London travel guides keep recommending: a close view from Westminster Bridge, a long view across the river from the South Bank, and a street-level view from Parliament Square. Each shows the tower differently, so pick by the picture you want.

Westminster Bridge

The closest view that needs no ticket.

From Westminster Bridge you see the tower and the Palace of Westminster up close. The river runs below you. If you turn around and look east, you can see the London Eye and the South Bank.

This is also the busiest spot. Pedestrians, tour groups and street traffic share the bridge, so do not plan on an empty frame. Nobody can promise a clear view at any hour.

Westminster Station on the Circle, District and Jubilee lines is next to the bridge, which makes this the easiest first stop. See the Westminster guide for the streets around it.

The South Bank and County Hall

The classic photo across the river.

The opposite bank gives you the tower, Parliament and the Thames in one frame. Visit London lists the South Bank as a photo location, and a South Bank guide covers several spots there as sunset views.

Near Westminster Bridge, the arch under the bridge can frame the tower. In front of County Hall you can use the bridge as a foreground. A guide describes this area as narrow and often crowded, and stairs or the underpass are not guaranteed to suit every visitor, so check the route if you use a wheelchair or a pushchair.

Further along, Jubilee Gardens works for the London Eye. For the full wheel, a guide recommends the Belvedere Road side. For Big Ben, walk closer to the river. The Golden Jubilee Bridge gives a raised view of the river and the landmarks.

Best time of day for photos

Sunset spots are documented. Perfect light is not.

Big Ben and Westminster Bridge at night

The South Bank spots above are the ones a local guide recommends for sunset. That is the one time of day with a source behind it.

Exact sun times, the best light for each month and quiet moments are not something you can count on. Look up the sunset time for your date, arrive 30 to 45 minutes early and keep a second spot in mind in case clouds or crowds spoil the first.

Stay flexible. If the sky is grey, move on to another spot instead of waiting at the first one.

Photo rules to know

Outside is open. Inside has limits.

Inside the tower

Photos are not allowed anywhere in the Elizabeth Tower. Bags, cameras and phones go into a secure locker. The tower tour guide explains who can book and how.

Inside Parliament

Private, non-commercial photos are allowed in Westminster Hall, St Stephen's Hall and the New Palace Yard visitor area. Other tour areas are restricted. Tripods are not allowed inside Parliament. Publishing or commercial use needs separate permission.

Jubilee Gardens

Drones and model aircraft, alcohol, cycling, scooters, skateboards, barbecues and open fires are not allowed in the gardens. These rules apply to the gardens, not to every street in London.

Along the river

Do not swim in the Thames at Westminster. The river authority advises against swimming in the tidal river.
